Definition and Classification of Elastomers and Plastics
Release date:
2025-09-19
Featuring high elasticity, wear resistance, and bendability as its core attributes, typical applications include tires, seals, damping materials, and more.
Definition
Elastomers and plastics are collectively referred to as rubber and plastic, both of which rely on petroleum as a secondary raw material—but they develop distinct physical properties through different manufacturing processes.
Rubber: Characterized by high elasticity, wear resistance, and excellent flexural strength, it is commonly used in applications such as tires, seals, and shock-absorbing materials.
Plastics: Characterized by their plasticity, hardness, and versatility in shaping, they are widely used in industries such as packaging, electronics, and construction.
Classification
Rubber is categorized into natural rubber (derived from rubber trees) and synthetic rubber (such as styrene-butadiene rubber, cis-polybutadiene rubber, chloroprene rubber, and more). Synthetic rubber is produced through chemical synthesis methods, offering a wide range of properties to meet diverse application needs.
Plastics can be categorized by performance into general-purpose plastics (such as PE, PP, and PVC) and engineering plastics (such as ABS, PC, and PA). They can also be classified by their physical form into thermoplastics (which can be repeatedly processed) and thermosetting plastics (which become permanently rigid after curing).
